Tuesday, April 24:

… which species “of special concern” makes its seasonal home by the Sunnyvale Landfill? A: Burrowing owls. The Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society even offers guided one-hour, bird-watching walks on the first Wednesday of the month.

Tuesday, April 17:

By popular demand, this week’s trivia is about the book being read by the statue in front of the Sunnyvale Public Library. It is a collection of stories by Juan Rulfo called “El Llano en Llamas”. The actual pages are from a story called “Nos han dado la tierra”. And yes, the library does have a copy (currently checked out until next week)!

Hey Sunnyvale-ites! We're starting Trivia Tuesdays. Today's informational tidbit: …The name of the statue in front of the Library is “Out to Lunch”, by the sculptor J. Seward Johnson. For the past few years, I’ve asked the people of Sunnyvale to nominate deserving charities to receive five $500 donations that I make each December. These charities can be local, national or internationally based, (with an emphasis on local!); it is just important that they support worthwhile causes. I think you’ll agree that this list is exactly that!

If you have a favorite charity you would like to be considered for the 2012 year, please email me at Dave@realtordaveclark.com. Here is a list of the charities that I have supported in the past:

- ALS Association Leading the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig's Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.

- Avon Breast Cancer Walk My wife and daughter trained for six months to participate in a 39 mile, two day walk. This organization supports detection, education and research about breast cancer.

- Cumberland Elementary School Walk-a-thon My two daughters, now in college, attended and thrived at Cumberland, in the Sunnyvale School District. I am a happy alumni-parent to support this wonderful school!

- Cupertino School District This local elementary and middle school district achieves some of the highest scores in all of California, and I am very proud to support it.

- Fremont High School Alumni Association For over fifty years, this organization has provided scholarships to worthy students.

- Fremont High School Athletic Boosters I really admire that there are no fees for after-school sports at Fremont High School. This is thanks to the fundraising efforts of this organization.

- Full Circle Farm A working, sustainable farm right here in Sunnyvale! Besides delicious fresh foods, it educates both the young and old.

- Habitat for Humanity This organization builds affordable housing for people – who use their own sweat equity as part of the purchase price. As a realtor, supporting affordable housing is an important goal.

- Homestead High School Athletic Boosters Both of my daughters also graduated from Homestead, and between them participated in softball, soccer, track and cross country. The teamwork learned in these sports was invaluable!

- Laurelwood Elementary School This Santa Clara school is dedicated to providing a positive, safe and nurturing environment while developing the whole child to become a contributing member of society.

- Let Them Hear Foundation A huge supporter of the hearing impaired, especially cochlear-implant technology. Although a local organization, they have trained leading doctors from 17 different countries, including 2/3 of the cochlear implant surgeons in China.

- San Jose Firefighters Burn Foundation Support a proactive educational and financial presence for the advancement in treatment and care of burn survivors and their families

- Second Harvest Food Bank For over 25 years, has supplied healthy food to low-income people in need in Santa Clara and San Mateo Valley. Just last year, this was over 45 million pounds! And personally, I have sorted food at their warehouse – an activity that takes only a phone call to arrange.

- Sunnyvale Girl's Softball League “Friends, Fun and Fast pitch Fun” – their motto says it all!

- Sunnyvale Metro Little League For girls and boys age 4 - 12 to have fun while learning baseball.

- Total Summer Camp A local summer camp for disadvantaged youth, that provides them with new experiences.

- West Valley Elementary School Walk-a-Thon This school in the Cupertino district believes their students should become lifelong learners, critical thinkers, innovators, and global leaders. A powerful vision!

- World Camp for Kids This organization works in Malawi, Africa, in very remote villages to educate and inspire through education of children in health and deforestation issues.
